Perhaps a sign stating, "please leave your shoes at the door"

In America we could add, "Shoe rules enforced by Smith & Wesson"

That would kinda help one to retain a macho cowboy image.

Quite a lot of people think it is better to put up a sign rather than ask people in person.

I suppose it probably easier to do that, but I am not convinced it is more polite.

I sure don't know what a kerfuffle is but my wife lived in Texas for quite awhile, so I am familar with Texas women.

Ilike this lady's attitude, but it was a pretty dumb thing to do.
