A colleague is about to install a light-coloured carpet. I suggested she should insist on shoes being removed in the house. She said she already did this.

Good for her.

Well some time ago a friend of mine said that she was going to look for a new carpet and I told her that I had light coloured ones and that they looked very nice. She said that she'd never have that as they were too difficult to keep clean and I then said that she should have a no shoes policy and that that worked very well in keeping them clean for me but all she said that her family would never agree to that. What's the matter with some people?

Every time I come to this blog I think, 'Only in Britain'. I have been to every part of the globe and it's only in my native land that it's not considered a matter of course to take your shoes off when entering someone's house.
Mind you, it's only in Britain I've been to people's houses, taken one look at them, and thought, 'I don't want to take my shoes off in here !'.

Rich, that sounds a rather defeatist attitude.

This lady I mentioned expressed concern about the colour of her carpet.

I pointed out that dark coloured carpets are actually harder to clean because a lot of dirt stands out on them.
