A Gentle Request

I went to my neighbour's apartment for some beers and an Indian takeaway.

Whenever I visit him, he always reminds me to shut the door and lift the handle up. Once or twice I had not lifted the latch and thus not shut it properly.

Its a simple request, but one that serves a purpose; to keep the door from blowing open and letting in the cold.

There is nothing rude about asking a guest to do or not do something. And there is nothing wrong with asking a guest to remove his or her shoes. You would not be asking them to do something horrible, but to do something they probably do in their own home.

Has your neighbour got a "shoes off policy"?

He does not wear shoes in his place and is careful about keeping the carpet clean.

I take mine off when I visit him, but I have no idea if he would be bothered if I did not.

Here's a good link:

http://www.mats4u.co.uk/catalogue_1.aspx?id=1:30494&cat=1:530846

It's a link to an online catalogue selling mats and amongst their range is a door mat asking visitors to take their shoes off at the door. And it's being sold by a company based in the U.K. This surely must be clear evidence that shoes off at the door is a growing trend in this country, that there is enough demand for this enough demand for mats bearing this message for a company to offer ot on sale in the Internet.

Funnily enough I posted a link to that particular product in the comments on "You should think about it" last Friday.

I thought you read every single comment on this blog!

Oh yes I remember now! Have you (or anyone else reading this blog) ever seen a similar mat for sale in a shop (e.g. B & Q, Homebase) I haven't so far despite looking out for ones every time I go. If and when such retail outlets start stocking them, it will be a most definite proof that "shoes off policies" have hit the big time. Roll on that day!

I don't believe Mats4u actually keep that product in stock. I think it is a made-to-order product (which is why it is so expensive!).

No I don't actually think it is. Apart from the mat saying "Welcome" and another about pets' paws, there are no other mats on sale with specific messages on them. You can have ones made to order with a slogan of your choice on them and they cost £119.00 plus VAT while the "shoes off" one (as well as the other 2 with specific messages on them)are only £59.95 plus VAT. So it would appear to me that it isn't made to order one that that they may well have some stock of them.

£59.95 is a lot when you can buy an ordinary doormat for about £10.

I was willing to pay that much because I really wanted it, but it was a lot.

It would be interesting to know how many of the "shoes off" mat the company does sell.

I just emailed them to ask if they would care to comment on its popularity.

Good for you! Please share your findings with the rest of us if they do get back to you. Have you explained to them why you're interested and told them about this blog?

Of course.

Hi,
I'm Marketing Manager at www.mats4u.co.uk. I read with interest your comments on our 'Please Take Off Your Shoes' door mat.

Unfortunately I did not get to see your email to us, but I hope you received a reply.

I can tell you that the mats are not a stock item, but are made to order, in the same way as our custom design door mats. They are a lower price because the design is already set up and so we do not have to spend time on creating new artwork.

Unfortunately they do not 'fly out the door' as it were, we sell approx one a month. I wish we could get the price nearer £10, but in truth the mats cost more than that to manufacture and then there's the delivery cost we include in the price.

Unless of course you could get 1000 people wanting these mats!!...ok I'll take my marketing hat off now, but thanks for your comments.

All the best,
Mark.

I think this is a great post. One thing that I find the most helpful is number five. Sometimes when I write, I just let the flow of the words and information come out so much that I loose the purpose. It’s only after editing when I realize what I’ve done. There’s defiantly a lot of great tips here I’m going to try to be more aware of.
