Chicago Sun Times: Shoes in the house or not? Lacing up the debate

I just discovered your blog, and I'm enjoying it. I have a shoes-off policy in my home, and I actually just (embarrassingly) snapped at a friend of mine tonight for always forgetting to take his shoes off when he walks in.

I used to be sheepish about asking people to take off their shoes, but now I have a sign posted on my door and (many) guests tend to obey.

I'm a little nervous about my boyfriend's and my graduation from law school that's coming up. I'm not sure how his elder grandparents will react when they are invited to a dinner at my apartment and discover I have a no-shoes policy in my home, as they don't have one in their own. (Incidentally, while my boyfriend respects my rule, he doesn't quite understand it.)

At least I'm not alone in all this! Thanks for the interesting posts!

Thanks for visiting and showing your appreciation.

I might be disinclined to ask an elderly person to remove her shoes, but you would be surprised by how many elderly people will take off their shoes without being asked.

Don't be afraid to ask people to remove their shoes. They may not do it in their homes, but a big part of life is experiencing things for the first time. You can't expect to go through life always doing what you normally do.
