The Prime Minister's Big Apology

Just over a week before the election, the prime minister got into a conversation with a voter in Rochdale, Gillian Duffy, who challenged him on the subject of immigration. Failing to turn off his microphone, he was overhead describing her as a 'bigoted woman.' The prime minister ended up having to make a personal visit to the woman's home to apologise and spent 45 minutes in conversation with her.

I hope Gillian Duffy made Gordon Brown and his aides take their shoes off. I would have done.

If you knew of half the times in my life when I said something I should NOT have said at the time (or ever), I'm afraid you wouldn't approve of me at all. (Even when I apologize for what I've said, I still feel super guilty about what I had said.)

This includes times when I've asked questions that I shouldn't have asked. (I'd love to believe that "there's no such thing as a stupid question, but personal experience suggests otherwise.)

I've watched a US film about surfers and was surprised with a shoes-off home shown before I learned the action took place in Hawaii )

Sandro, yes, Hawaii is on the red 'shoes-off' part of the world map.

But plenty of ex-islanders living on the US mainland and spreading the custom.

MM, its easy to say the wrong thing. What is remarkable in this case is how our prime minister reacted so strongly to such fairly commonplace sentiments and a conversation that ended rather pleasently. He is a bit weird.

Barak Obama? )

I did mention Obama as a possible offalist a while back, but I have never been invited for tea at the White House, so I can't say for certain.

Bizarrely, some right-wing extremist cited a photograph in which Obama was in his socks as evidence he was a Muslim! So only Muslims ever take their shoes off?

At his or another home?

Not sure.

is the photo available online?

Probably. The story just sounded too embarassingly silly for me to want to research it.

As somebody of generally conservative and right-wing sentiments, I felt embarassed by the story.

Aw come on! (To the extremist, not you, CF.) I have relatives on my dad's side who go barefoot in their own home quite often (which I think is for comfort rather than out of conviction regarding footwear in the home), and guess what? They're SOUTHERN BAPTISTS! In my family, what one wears or doesn't wear from the ankle down in one's own house at any one time has NOTHING to do with religion.

I don't suppose the "extremist" would care too much what Obama was/was not wearing from the ankle down if he wasn't President but rather an obscure citizen like say, me (unless the person in question is a strict Tramplian; and I haven't seen the story myself).
