65 Degrees North: ‘Finland’s Ruining My Socks!’

65 Degrees North: ‘Finland’s Ruining My Socks!’

Taking your shoes off indoors is just so obvious a custom in Finland that nobody seems to question it at all. ‘Why would you keep your shoes indoors?’ asks Riitta, 29, an Oulu teacher. ‘It’s disgusting. I think that we Finns like to keep our houses clean.’
‘I wouldn’t wear my shoes in house,’ comments Katariina, 29, also a teacher. ‘And I definitely wouldn’t wear them in somebody else’s house. I never really thought about it. But you don’t want to bring dirt from outside inside.’

This article has some interesting discussion about how old the custom of removing shoes in Finnish homes is.

Very good article. One encouraging point was made by one of the people quoted there who said that she removal was a relatively new development in Finland. If that is the case it shows that a country culture can change to be in favour of it in a relatively short period of time and let's hope that such a change is now underway in the U.K. and the rest of the western world.

hello, i am in dalals, tx, usa, and i am a firm advocate of shoes at the door. it is so weird for people here.
this morning i called the pest services that will be treating our apartment building today and i requested they wear booties inside...you would not believe the reaction i got. of course, i will require the booties, but it was such a task.

don't people understand how DISGUSTING it is to wear your street shoes indoors?

then i am questioned how i manage to keep my house so clean.

Thanks for visiting.

So you don't know many other people in Dallas who have a shoes-off policy?

Please keep visiting.
