Property Inspection

A lady from the lettings agency came to inspect the apartment I rent today. It was the first time I had been present when an inspection was carried out.

The lady removed her shoes without being asked. She had visited before, so she would have seen my 'Please Take Off Your Shoes' doormat.

She was a nice lady, though I hope she gives a good report on how I am looking after the place.

Very professional of her - what was she wearing?

Matthew Celestis said...

She was wearing a pair of black slip-on sneakers.

She commented the pair of 14-hole Doc Martin boots by my door, observing that it must take ages to take them off. I said I mostly wear them in snowy weather. She told me her days of wearing DMs were long gone.

It has been a while since I have posted. Hope all is well with you.
We have been having our share of bad weather here in NC.
Had a vist from the woman who handles our insurance the other day. When she arrived she saw me in socks and said," Ill leave my shoes here if that's ok with you"
Nice lady and understands our needs and not pushy!

Very good

Bob - what was she wearing? Was she dressed up?

Bob said...

Yes she was professionally attired. Skirt, blouse, stockings and red flats which as I mentioned she shed at the door. Just so there are no misunderstandings my wife was home as well.

Anonymous said...

This was very professional of her to take off her shoes in this situation. Did you offer her slippers or did she walk around in her stocking feet? What was her age?

Bob said...

I don't know if I would say professional, I considered it more courteous. I would say that she was in her early 40's. We did not offer her slippers as the room where we were sitting is carpeted and the temprature was set at 73 degrees. Unless you are going to provide new slippers for each guest, asking someone to wear previously worn slippers is not hygenic. So yes she spent the hour or so that she was here in her stocking feet.

I see - did she look comfortable in her stocking feet and did her feet look presentable? I'd rather let someone with un attractive feet keep their shoes on.

Bob said...

She did not seem ill at ease in her stocking feet whatsoever. She acted perfectly natural. I would assume that she is either use to removing her shoes when visiting a client and/or has a no shoes rule in her own home as well. While I certainly did not study her feet they did appear to be normal. If her feet were unattractive it would be rather akward to tell her to put her shoes back on since we maintain a shoe free home. Plus my wife would have smacked me for being rude!

Bob - for me, the policy is to have the visitor do what is comfortable for them - I will never tell them to take their shoes off, but am happy when they do. It was nice of you not to tell the lady to take her shoes off and let her make her own choice. I am sure she was used to going in stocking feet at her clients' homes, but I know that a lot of women are not.

Bob said...

If she had not offered I would certainly have asked her to take off her shoes as that is our house rule. My wife has no problem removing her shoes at the door when visiting someone and all other woman, save one, that have visted our home have willingly removed their shoes either on their own or when asked.
May I ask where you live?

Anonymous said...

Bob - I am in Virginia, right next to DC, and usually people here do keep their shoes on when visiting others' homes, especially if they don't know them well. So, I would not want to make such a request but would definitely prefer that shoes came off when the weather is bad. In your situation, I would thank the lady for taking her shoes off and give her a nice compliment on her outfit so she feels at ease.

Bob said...

Wow we are almost neighbors...we live in NC having moved here from CT. Oh my wife thanked her for leaving her shoes at the door.
Our shoes off rule has been in place for a long time dating back to the days before we were married. We have kept it in place for two primary reasons...it keeps the house cleaner and we have hardwood floors and light carpeting. Sometime I should tell you the story of the first time my wife, then my girl friend visited my apartment

Anonymous said...

Bob - what is the story and who started the policy, you or your wife?

Let me tell you one more story... I went to an open house a couple of winters ago, the realtor present was a lady in her 40s. She was in stocking feet (her boots left at the door) and made me take my shoes off too to keep the carpets clean. She and I chatted, I complimented her stocking feet and she laughed and thanked me and said her feet have to be presentable when showing a house.

Bob said...

ok here is the story. My wife, then girl friend, was coming over to my apartment for the first time. I was going to cook her dinner. I was running late and had to pick up a few things from the store. I had a woman who cleaned my apartment once a week and she was there that day. I called and told her the situation and asked if she would stay until my girl friend arrived. She argreed. Well she arrived and the housekeeper answered the door and let her in.
I know the following to be true as both my now wife and housekeeper told the same version.
As she was about to step into the living room the housekeeper said, you are not coming in here with shoes on please take them off or you will get the place dirty. She did as she was told. Everytime she visited thereafter she left her shoes at the door for fear of angering my housekeeper!
So in answer to your question it was my housekeeper who instituted the rule!

Anonymous said...

Bob - what a great story! If not for that housekeeper you would never have instituted such a policy!

What do you think of my story? Was it nice of me to break the ice by giving the lady compliments on her stocking feet? She seemed to live the compliment.

Bob said...

that was a nice gesture on your part. Paying someone a compliment is always a good way to break the ice...did you ever see her again?

Anonymous said...

No, I never saw her again. But I do remember how we were chatting there and how she liked my compliments. She seemed to be completely at ease in her stocking feet and her black stockings went well with her outfit. She told me that she was used to taking her shoes off to show houses and so she made sure she looked her best in her stocking feet. This is probably a common trait among women who have to visit their clients at their home, don't you think?

Bob said...

I think that you are quite correct.
A woman who has the need to visit clients in their home should always make an effort to put their best foot forward!
However I don't think it is only woman who visit clients home's that do this. I know that my wife always makes sure to look her best when she visits someone

Anonymous said...

Well, a lot of women try to look their best when they visit someone's home but how many of them think ahead and make sure they will still look good when/if they take off their shoes?

I also wonder why that realtor did not bring her slippers to the house and just went in stocking feet. Probably for better looks, I assume, or just to look more convincing when she makes others take their shoes off.

Bob said...

I think that she did not wear slippers so as you said , look more convincing when asking others to take off their shoes.
As far as other woman thinking ahead about looking well if they remove their shoes, I know that my wife does. she always makes sure that her nylons are without runs and that her socks are matched and clean.

Anonymous said...

This is very nice of your wife. Why does she prefer to take her shoes off in people's houses rather than leaving her shoes on?

Also, it seems like a generational thing. People older than 45 or so are less likely to take their shoes off.

Bob said...

Can not comment on the generational issue as I have seen it both ways.
She removes her shoes for two primary reasons...shows respect for the home and since we require it in our home it would be hypocritical of her not to do so in the homes of others...she may not admit it but I am sure she finds it more comfortable

Anonymous said...

This is very respectful of your wife. I am curious, has your wife been to any situation when all the women present are in their stocking feet?

Bob said...

I assume that you mean at other than our own home where it occurs all the time.
She has many times been at gathering where all the woman were shoeless

Anonymous said...

So why were all the women shoeless? Cleanliness reasons, or also comfort? I guess there was a huge collection of heels at the door.

Bob said...

I would assume that it was primarily because the hostess had a no shoe rule similar to ours. Inclement weather would also have been a factor in the winter months. When we lived in CT I do remember her telling me that a neighbor who also had a no shoes rule invited 25 or so woman to her home to hear the woman who was running for mayor of the town speak. Everyone including the canidate revoved their shoes

Anonymous said...

I see - this was nice of the candidate to remove her shoes. I assume that everyone was dressed up, so apparently all the ladies, the candidate included, were walking around in their stockings? I assume the candidate still looked presentable in her stocking feet, wouldn't she feel a little cold though?

Bob said...

I have absolutely no idea how they were dressed, but I assume that they were not wearing sweat suits!.
What choice did the canidate have, the person who invited her had a no shoes rule so she either complied or forgo the opportunity to speak

Anonymous said...

Just curious, how common are no-shoes-allowed homes in CT vs. NC?

I think it is a little cruel to give someone visiting your house no choice but remove her shoes, some people really don't like it.

Bob said...

no shoe homes are more common in CT although there are some here in NC including two woman who are on my wife's staff
If you inform the person before hand they have the choice of coming or not. They could also ask if it would be acceptable to exchange their shoes for slippers

Anonymous said...

I wonder why no-shoe homes are more common in CT. Might have to do with the weather. Is it more common for women there to bring their slippers or just go in their stocking feet?

Bob said...

I think the weather is a major factor...and shoes vs slippers depends on the individuals preference

Anonymous said...

Well, I think stocking feet look better than slippers... But slippers are probably way more comfortable. What do you think?

Sandro said...

IMHO stockinged feet are more comfortable as well.

Bob said...

I think that slippers vs stocking feet would be based on the preference of the individual. However, based on my observation of my wife's preferences, it is stocking feet in carpeted homes and slippers of sorts in homes with hardwood floors

Anonymous said...

I wonder why she prefers stocking feet when she is on the carpet.

Bob said...

probably feels nicer...what we need is a woman's input...are there any female readers of this blog who would care to comment?

Anonymous said...

Would be nice to hear a woman's point of view.

You can order it from a website called Mats4U. Though it's not cheap.

well I would just like to say that here in Canada a lot of us work in our stockinged feet,it is much more comfortable I find.

elain smith said...

I always work in my stocking feet, and here for the most part we do go in stocking feet in doctors offices and most dentists here also require stocking feet in there offices,I have no problem with that at all,and on occasion I have been taken by a receptionist to the back in her stocking feet,I must say it is somewhat comforting.

Matthew Celestis said...

Elaine, you live in Canada like the last anonymous commenter?

elain smith said...

actually that was me lol yes a proud Canadian

elaine smith said...

Up here it is part of the culture, when I was young and went to church thats where I think I became aware of it more since in our church the women and girl were required to remove there shoes before entering the chapel I never asked why I just assumed thats the way it was so I guess you could say I grew up in stocking feet lol

Anonymous said...

Elaine this is kind of cool, are you in stocking feet even when you are dressed up? Do you wear tights/stockings then?

Elain Smith said...

Well,I usually always wear opaque tights (leotards)if its warm I will wear pantyhose reinforced toes, and yes I am always in my stockinged feet,Im not sure if anyone notices they probably dont as a lot of women go in their stockinged feet as well.

Anonymous said...

I am curious, what is the reason for stockinged feet? Is it because it is cleaner, or is it for comfort reasons, or both?

Elaine Smith said...

Both actually,I remember in school if you misbehaved some of the teacher would take your shoes away, and you would be required to go in stocking feet for the rest of the day lol it was meant to embarrass the student but there were a few of us who didn't mind lol

Anonymous said...

Elaine, just curious, what part of Canada are you from? And, what color of tights/pantyhose you prefer to wear when you are stocking-footed?

Elain Smith said...

I am in western Canada, and I prefer black tights, and cinnamon colored pantyhose with reinforced toes, when I am stocking footed, but I prefer the tights even in the summer, are you in the states?

Elain Smith said...

I take it you like stocking feet lol thats fine I do to lol

Anonymous said...

Elaine - black and cinnamon are great colors, have you ever been complimented on your stockinged feet? Yes, I am in the States.

Elain Smith said...

not as I can remember, lol but I am getting ready for work, wearing black opaque tights today, and since it is wet and slushy here,I will most likely be in stockinged feet today, have a good one

Anonymous said...

Elaine - where do you store your shoes while you work and how many other gals are in stocking feet? Does anyone tell you to remove your shoes when it is slushy or it is just common at your office?

Elain Smith said...

we store them in lockers, beside the lunch room, and there were a few ladies working in stocking feet today,do you happen to see women woking in stocking feet where you are, just wondering?

Anonymous said...

Elaine,no, no one works in stocking feet where I am, that's why I was so surprised by what you discussed. Did you wind up in stocking feet today? What were the other ladies wear? If I visited your work area, would you prefer I take my shoes off?

Elain Smith said...

LOL,no you would not have to do that, and yes I was in my stocking feet today,

Anonymous said...

Were you in stocking feet the whole day? And, were the other shoeless women in opaque tights too?

Elain Smith said...

well I was,the others for the most part do have inside shoes, but in the afternoon they will shed them(some of them) and they were wearing pantyhose.no one thatI noticed was wearing tights but me

Anonymous said...

So why did they shed their inside shoes, and what colors of pantyhose did they wear? Have you considered bringing indoor shoes, too, or you strongly prefer stockinged feet?

Elain Smith said...

As with most women, your feet start to hurt in the afternoon, esp if your moving around very much,so you will see them in stockinged feet going to the printer etc,and some were wearing naturals, and some in darker shades, and I do have inside shoes, but I find it easier just to go without.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like you work in a very comfy office. How many people are working there? How often does it happen when people are at a meeting and one or more are shoeless? Do more women go around in stocking feet when the weather outside is bad? Are your floors warm?

Elain Smith said...

we have 8 females on staff, and most just change their shoes, but there have been days when most are in stocking feet,on the carpeted floors,as for meetings,I know I do go in stocking feet,I havnt really noticed some may slip off their shoes but cant tell around the table lol

Anonymous said...

Sounds like a very comfy office. I noticed that it might be a generational thing, younger women are more likely to go in stocking feet, have you noticed it too? I probably would compliment you on your stocking feet, would you welcome it or find it strange?

Elaine Smith said...

hmmm I dont know,I cant recall that ever happening lol,and I am not sure about the generational theory, but then I havnt gave it any thought to tell you the truth sorry

Anonymous said...

I see. I still might compliment you. What did you wear yesterday and how many of you wound up in stocking feet?

Elaine Smith said...

I wore a black and white dress, and black tights, and I think I was the only one in stockinged feet,Im sure the others had there inside shoes on.

Mark said...

Hi Elaine, you mentioned when you were at school that sometimes you were punished by being made to go without shoes. We had very similar punishments. One teacher especially believed in making us go bare foot in school all day when we played up in class.

Anonymous said...

Elaine, you looked great, what about today? Don't your feet ever get cold in just tights?

Elain Smith said...

thank you, today,I am going to wear a pant suit(dark brown/with matching tights, and brown shoes but they will probably come off lol,and no the office is carpeted so our feet dont get cold I say my dont I cant speak for the other girls lol,got to get ready have a good day

Anonymous said...

Have a good day at work and I hope you feel comfortable and kick your shoes off. Let me know what other girls were wearing, too.

If the flooring you put down can't stand a few shoes you made the wrong choice. If you can't be bothered cleaning regularly you still made the wrong choice. Great example for all - let's impose my psychological issues on everyone who dares come through the door. Lazy people who have no problem making people feel unwelcome - and hey see theirselves as the ones in the right (anything to do with religious intolerance ring a bell here?)
